Everyone of us encounters roadblocks...

Have you ever tried to catch a ball, only to get blocked by someone? You can’t help but feel disappointed because you nearly reached your goal to catch the ball, but you didn’t. People face blocks all the time. It’s a part of life.

This month in the Business Suite, I am talking all about goal setting. Because of that, I thought I would give you a bit of insight into the peaks and valleys of having goals.

I wanted to talk about goal setting and the roadblocks that come along with it.

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."

Thomas Edison

Setting goals is a task every single person should embrace. Whether you do it every New Year or at various times throughout the year, knowing what you want in life will prevent that feeling of just floating through each day without purpose. Knowing your purpose and goals motivates you to wake up and take action every single day.

Setting goals in every aspect of your life will keep you focused on what you want. Whether it’s about losing weight to regain your health or increasing your business profits to move to a warmer climate, knowing what you want allows you to put action steps in place. After all, nothing happens in life without taking action.

If you’re feeling defeated with not reaching goals in the past, don’t worry. Even the most successful celebrities and business owners have seen their own failures but continued to set goals anyway.

The Artist, Adele

Entertainer extraordinaire Adele kept a photograph of an Academy Award where she'd see it every day. In 2013 she won an Oscar for the theme song to the James Bond movie, Skyfall.

"Adele's accolades include fifteen Grammy Awards and nine Brit Awards. In 2011, 2012, and 2016, Billboard named her Artist of the Year. At the 2012 and 2016 Ivor Novello Awards, Adele was named Songwriter of the Year by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors. In 2012, she was listed at number five on VH1's 100 Greatest Women in Music. Time magazine named her one of the most influential people in the world in 2012 and 2016. Her third tour saw her break attendance records globally, including in the UK, Australia, and the US, and her album 21 has been listed in Rolling Stone'500 Greatest Albums of All Time (2020)."

The Athlete, Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan, arguably one of the best pro basketball players of all time, was rejected by the high school basketball varsity team because he was too short. Told he would never play at that level, Michael trained even harder and visualized his name in a professional locker room.

"Michael Jeffrey Jordan (born February 17, 1963), also known by his initials MJ, is an American former professional basketball player and businessman. His biography on the official National Basketball Association (NBA) website states: "By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time."

The Visionary, Walt Disney

Did you know, Walt Disney was laughed at by many bankers when he proposed his idea for the Disney World theme park. The last laugh is on them because today the entire Disney franchise – including the many theme parks, movies, and merchandise – is worth many billions of dollars.

"Walter Elias Disney; December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966) was an American entrepreneur, animator, writer, voice actor, and film producer. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he introduced several developments in the production of cartoons. As a film producer, he holds the record for most Academy Awards earned by an individual, having won 22 Oscars from 59 nominations. He was presented with two Golden Globe Special Achievement Awards and an Emmy Award, among other honors. Several of his films are included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress."

Writer J.K. Rowling

TheWriter, J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling, famously known for writing the Harry Potter series, couldn’t get book publishers to talk to her. Depending on food stamps to survive, she finally found a publisher who agreed to publish her book after the publisher’s daughter started reading the book and became entranced.

"J. K. Rowling, is a British author, philanthropist, film producer, and screenwriter. She is the author of the Harry Potter series, which has won multiple awards and sold more than 500 million copies as of 2018, and became the best-selling book children's series in history in 2008. The books are the basis of a popular film series.

Rowling has progressed from living on the welfare system, benefits, to being named the world's first billionaire author by Forbes, an assertion that she disputed. Forbes reported that she lost her billionaire status after giving away much of her earnings to charity."

The Inventor, Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison is another person who was labeled as “stupid” by his teachers, yet at one point he held over 1,000 patents for new inventions. Most famous for inventing the lightbulb, Edison is also known for the quote:

"American inventor and businessman. He developed many devices in fields such as electric power generationmass communicationsound recording, and motion pictures. These inventions, which include the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and early versions of the electric light bulb, have had a widespread impact on the modern industrialized world.
