You’ve probably heard that quote before.
I’ve even shared it, a long time ago. But lately, it’s been following me around again—and I’m listening.
It is totally true that most of us make more decisions from memory than imagination. Especially in business. We look at what’s worked before. What didn’t. What other people expect of us, and we act accordingly.
It’s strategic. It’s safe. It’s also… limiting.
Because when you’re in the messy middle of business—after the launch but before the traction—it’s dangerously easy to mistake history for direction.
You start saying things like:
“I’ve never been the kind of person who…”“
I just don’t think I’m built for…”
“I tried that once. Never again.”
That’s not strategy. That’s self-protection dressed as wisdom because now, there is that much more of a risk, but…
What if you let possibility back in the room? What if you gave the future the mic—just for a minute? What if you stopped asking your past to co-sign every next move?
You don’t need a dramatic pivot.Just one honest moment to ask:If I wasn’t stuck in the past, what would I move toward next?
That question alone might shift more than you expect.
